The legacy system and the legacy crisis are the hotspot in recent information technology industry. Decades after developed, the existing information systems fail to keep pace with the latest business requirements. Modernizing legacy system is an effective solution to legacy crisis. PERS is a critical investment performance evaluation and reporting system of an international financial services provider. Developed 25 years ago, PERS is a typical legacy system whose hardware and software platforms are running out of technical support and are no long able to catch up with the performance need and new business enhancement need. As a key information system, modernizing it to meet business needs is imperative. The Reporting system is one of the most frequently used, highest visibilities, and most important subsystem of PERS, but the report it generates is with look-and-feel of 15 years ago and cannot satisfy the clients. Reporting system thus has highest priority in PERS modernizing. This dissertation addresses the initiatives and the objectives of modernizing PERS Reporting system and reverse engineering result, and then, from modernizing and reengineering perspectives, depicts the new system architecture design and technical tradeoffs and technical difficulties during design and development. Further, this dissertation describes the business and technical key points and landscape of Business Intelligence, and proposed an architecture and framework of next generation PERS Reporting system with Business Intelligence enabled, based on SAS Business Intelligence platform. Although the solutions addressed in this paper come from PERS Reporting Fidelity project, they can be leveraged by other similar reengineering projects. |
