With the development of integrated circuitry, micro electromechanical system, digital signal processing and the embedded Internet, a new information gathering and processing model— wireless sensor network has received widespread attention. Wireless sensor networks consist of randomly distributive sensors and are formed through distributed protocols. They have been widely applied to the military, meteorology, aerospace, telecommunication, medical, commercial, and other industries, with bright application prospects.Because of tremendous application value of sensor networks, great attentions have been pain to them by many military departments, industry and academia researchers. As a new research area, wireless sensor networks face many challenges;one of them is network management for wireless sensor networks. Network management is a technology and method used to monitor, diagnose, test and control communication equipments or transmission systems in networks. Management for wireless sensor networks is an important condition for ensuring network security, stability, reliability and high-efficiency.Aimed at the prospect and the request of network management for wireless sensor networks, the thesis studies network management architecture and related issues. After an overall introduction of wireless sensor networks and network management, a comparison of existing network management model for wireless sensor networks is given first, then on the basis of features of wireless sensor network such as limited power and imbalances traffic among sensor nodes, a new policy-based and agent-enabled network management architecture PANMA (policy Agent Network Management Architecture) for wireless sensor networks is proposed using the technologies of policies and mobile agents. The design of each part in PANMA and the management process are explained in details. In addition, the definition of policies of deferent layers and the classification of functions in network management are discussed, which is a supplement to PANMA. According to special request of network management for wireless sensor networks, the policy information base has been extended in order to manage variables better. Finally, by describing applications of specific clustering and objective parameters selection ofrouting method in PANMA, the architecture is proved to have characteristics of flexibility for higher manager and convenience of making full use of methods themselves.
