Since the 1990's, with the rising up of the third science revolution wave, the technology of communication and computer network is developing with tremendous speed and the human race has rushed into digital information period. As a rapidly developing electrical information technology, the multimedia technology is one of the hottest focus points because it brings about directional revolutions in traditional computer system and audio-video devices. It ameliorates people's communication and gives a far-reaching impact on public communication. As one of the multimedia technology, the video technology is also promoted and a series of standards were mapped out, such as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.261, H.263 and H.264.In the new century, with the increase of both the density and the speed of the VLSI, and the widely applied network technology, the video codec standard plays an important role on application of communication, computer and broadcast. It has brought about many changes in people's lives. As a new generation of video codec criterion, H.264/AVC is focused in the field of video because of its unique character.This paper includes five aspects as follows:The instruction briefly presents the development of video technology and the basic conception.Chapter Ⅱ introduces the structure of H.264/AVC and its main technology, such as inter and intra prediction, deblocking filter, transform, quantization and entropy coding.Chapter Ⅲ analyses the structure of data stream and extracts its syntax and semantics.In chapter Ⅳ, the entropy coding is described, and according to the characteristic of entropy coding tables, an optimization of dividing blocks to lessen the searching range has been brought forward, so that the decoding speed of processing the entropy coder is greatly increased.Finally, a summary of this paper is presented and the tide of video codec is discussed.
