With the development of economy and the improvement of people's living standards, house meters, such as ammeter, water meter and gas meter, are used more widely. At the same time, reading the meters has become a mass and troublesome work. Traditional ways no longer adapt to the development of society any more. However, with the help of computer technology and communication technology, it's possible to read meter automatically. All kinds of AMR (Automatic Meter Reading) systems come to existence, which not only substitute the manual work but also establish the base for better service. Thus automatic meter reading system of electrical power line as a popular type has been put into use. Whereas, Owing to large harmonics and disturbances in low electrical power voltage exist in our country commonly, which cause the system mentioned above running unstably and in low efficiency. To solve the problem of this common meter reading system in application, the paper designed an automatic meter reading embedded system based on Ethernet. This system is a totally new AMRS (Automatic Meter Reading System), using Ethernet as its platform to transfer data in long distance, and embedded microprocessor is used in this system. This paper introduces some familiar AMR systems, analyzes their characteristics at first, and keeps emphasis on the design of controller based on Ethernet AMR system. Chapter 1 introduces the status of AMR technology nowadays. Chapter 2 introduces some familiar AMR systems, analyzes their characteristics and efficiency. Chapter 3 introduces the stabilization and reliability of the Ethernet. Chapter 4 and 5 describe the design of the controller in detail, both hardware and software. The MCU used and embedded system established are also introduced detailedly. Last chapter is the end, which depicts the difficulty in our AMR system and the future development of AMR technology. As we expected, this system has a high stabilization and reliability, meeting the demands of material running and managing, getting much economic benefits and running benefit, and having extensive practicability and market value.
