In traditional grid computing technology, the heterogeneity of grid resources has increased the complication of grid systems. Hence the practical applications of the grid technology have been encumbered in some measure. On the other hand, the personal computers (PCs) as tools are so popular that there are lots of spare PCs on the Internet. In this article, we design a lightweight grid middleware system in which the grid resources are all spare PCs on the Internet.PC resources have their own characteristics, such as large quantity, widely distributed, homogeneous, few operating systems, weak computing power and highly volatile. The lightweight grid middleware system described in this article uses a distributed PC resource tree structure to manage PC resources, and use virtual node technology and local self-manage strategy to discover PC resources and maintain the PC resource tree structure. Since PC resources are managed in system as well as are managing other PCs, the bottleneck of efficiency and single fault in central management strategy are eliminated. For a simple and efficiency task partition process, the task in this system should be split linearly and sub tasks would be assigned to specify PC resources down the PC resource tree layer by layer. The task submitting node and task split node are normally different nodes in PC resource tree. The runtimes of sub tasks are monitored and controlled by distributed PC resources. When transferring large files from one single node to multiple nodes, this system improves the transfer rate by means of a P2P-based file transfer model. In the finality, a prototype implementation of this system is discussed.
