As an open resource project initiated by Sun Microsystems that provides standard protocols for the peer-to-peer (P2P) application programs and services, JXTA (the abbreviation of"juxtapose") is a promising candidate for distributed network computing platform on the P2P computation can be carried out, in which it is specified that each of the peers in a P2P network plays an equal role. JXTA has interoperability, platform-independence and ubiquitous and security. It provides the basic mechanism to solve the problems in the present distributed computing application. It establishes a virtual network upon super physics frame network which is a distributed, dynamic, expansive Internet architecture, in order to realize the new united, secure, interoperable, different architecture and ubiquitous network application. In the short history of P2P application, it has become one of the main application types that consume a large fraction of Internet traffic. This thesis addresses the distributed computing techniques based on JXTA. First, the state-of-the-art of distributed computing is reviewed, and some related problems are listed, with emphasis on P2P (including several typical distributed computing technology, the role and development of P2P in distributed computing, the basic system structure and principal features of P2P, and how to apply JXTA technology to P2P network). Then, the theme is focused on the JXTA distributed network computing technology (including the advantages of the P2P system platform, the characters and the system structure of JXTA, the core components and their action on P2P system, the basis services, and the protocols), and JXTA application (such as file sharing, searching engine, coordinated work and network games etc.) and some problems (including security, efficiency about resource searching and routing algorithm). Finally, a new file-transmitting system with pure equal way is implemented using the JXTA distributed network computing technology. The work of this thesis is closed by indicating further directions of research.
