This work is supported by National Science Foundation of China. The object is toresearch and develop Er/Yb co-doped phosphate glass waveguide lasers. The small allsolid-state lasers can be used as optical sources in wire-less optical communicationand atmosphere-measure systems. They will have broaden promising application onthem.Characterization of ion-exchanged glass optical waveguides is studied theoreticallyand experimentally, also summarized are their applications in this paper. The indecesdistribution of waveguides by ion-exchanging are analyzed and optimizednumerically. The distribution of both planar waveguides and channel waveguides afterion-exchanging are discussed. The researching work are described in brief as follows.1. The advantages of glass waveguide lasers and their application are reviewedalong with their fabrication process, performance and developments of Er/Ybco-doped glass waveguide lasers.2. The method of fabrication for glass waveguide by ion-exchanging is expatiated. The principle and fabrication of the method are summarized as well.3. Based on the combination of WKB and Marcatili method by which the indexprofile of a channel waveguide can be calculated, a new method for calculatingthe index profile of index-graded channel waveguides is developed by us for thefirst time.4. I success in working out a Matlab program for calculating a number of indices ofplanar waveguides and channel waveguides samples which are fabricated andmeasured by our group. The relationship between the fabricative parameters andthe index profiles of waveguide are established by comparing and analizing theresults. This work provides us a reliable conclusion for the further research.
