Mounter, a key equipment of SMT (surface mounting technology) product line, is a complex system which is related to mechanics, electronics, computer, artificial intellingence (AI) and optics. Its price is 50% of the whole procduct line. Machine vision system is one of key parts in the multi-function surface mount equipmens. Based on the deep-analysis of today's high performance mounter vision system, and by intergrating the reseach project, a further study is made on the vision system's scheme construction, hardware component, image preprocessing arithmetic, software development etc. The main issues are as follows:1. Mounter vision system scheme. The principle of mounter vision system is introduced in this chapter and hardware selection of the system which includes: light source, sensor images, image grabber card is discussed.2. Image preprocessing. Some traditional image preprocessing methods are introduced and the most suitable ways of image recognition with component are selected in this section. The result of experiment indicates the process is effective and available.3. Camera calibration problem is one of key issues of machine vision research. Some basic theory and methods of camera calibration are introduced in this section. The method published by TSAI is used in the system, based on analysing exsiting calibration methods.4. SMD location and inspection arithmetic are key issues in vision inspection system. The main work of this paper is to find a searching method for determing the location of mark point in mounter vision system. SMD of common package types are classified based on the arranged shape of leads. Different detecting methods are designed for different package types' SMD. The results of experiment prove that the introduced method in this paper is effective and feasible.
