The communication in the classic CAN bus is event triggered, while its peak loads may occur when the transmission of several massages is requested at the same time. CAN's non-destructive arbitration mechanism can not guarantee that each node can transmission its message in time. So the classic CAN bus is not a hard real-time system. The Time-Triggered CAN (TTCAN) is built upon the classic CAN network. TTCAN protocol describes the prerequisites needed for the synchronization of all nodes in the CAN network. Using TDMA, TTCAN can ensure that all the transmission deadlines are met at any time. This dissertation introduces TTCAN protocol, describes how to build a TTCAN hardware and software, and discusses the application of TTCAN to a tire roller.
