With the continuous development of autovideo coding technology, H.264/AVC becomes a new standard of video-compression which can provide higher compressibility and more friendly net interface. In March 2003, the Joint Video Team (JVT) composed by two expert teams published the final draft of this compressed autovideo standard, which is called H.264 agreement of ITU-T, or the advanced part of autovideo coding of MPEG-4 of ISO/IEC.By studying the principles of H.264/AVC, we realize that the computing complication of H.264/AVC codec is far beyond the other autovideo standard. This article focuses the discussion of H.264/AVC codec from the perspective of real time application. After studing the principles of H.264 codec and analyzing each part in detail, we analyze the software optimization of H.264 decoder and give out the performance comparison results before and after the optimization. At the meantime, we also research the motion estimation module which undertakes the most computing task in H.264 encoder. Some popular software and hardware computing methods in modern world are introduced, analyzed and compared. Based on the combination of all kinds of software computing methods and hardware structures, an improved hardware structure is proposed, and its feasibility is studied through software simulation and hardware scheduling analysis.
