The optical disk storage technology is a newly developed high-tech started in the 70s. It is provided with a series of advantages over other record mediums, such as high storage density, large capacity, random access, long preservation longevity, reliable and stable performance, and portability of carrying. The optical disk storage technology is especially suitable for the storage and exchange of large data stream. Not only does this technology meet the needs of the mass storage in informatization society, but also it could be characterized by simultaneous storages of the sound, the character, the chart, the picture and so on, which thereby results in a fundamental change for the traditional means of the information storage, transmission, management and application. The DVD optical disk storage is the most important and influential storage technology at present. Almost all the latest researches on this field are based on DVD. The configuration and channel characteristic of the DVD optical storage system are lucubrated in this paper, as well as the theoretic analysis of the signal read-write of each part, the simulation model of the DVD optical storage system established on the basis of the analysis, and the evaluation of the read-write capability of this system. Through the theoretic analysis of the optical storage coding and the simulation experiment of the optical storage system, an improved decoding project was proposed in allusion to the widely used RLL(d,k) code in the optical storage system. And this project was validated by the simulation experiment to be effective in improving the encoding capability and velocity. When the optical storage technology comes to the DVD level, the size of the recording symbol has approached the limitation. So it is the breakthrough and realization of higher density storage that would be the main targets in the next generation optical storage research. On the basis of the research on DVD optical storage technology, the newest high density optical storage technologies are discussed and compared in this paper, and besides the multilevel optical storage technology, the most representative and potential technology in the high density optical storage fields, is particularly reviewed and analyzed theoretically.
