Network Monitor and Management System (NMMS) can monitor networks' status remotely. It can also control network devices' configuration. Thus, NMMS is essential for improving the reliability and performance of network, and it is also the basis for managing network effectively. In hierarchical network systems, the type of the network devices to be managed is various. The complex of the communication mechanism that these devices support provides a number of challenges for NMMS. Also, these devices contain many types of configurations which are very complicated. This leads to the difference of configure flow and fault handling among variant types. Moreover, the large amount of networks and their geographical distributions increase the importance of high performance, high availability of NMMS.This thesis proposes an adaptable, flexible and high-performance NMMS architecture for hierarchical network systems. Not only does it analyze the difficulties on the design and implementation of the system, it also provides solutions to conquer those difficulties. This architecture and its implementation provide the flexibility for adding and changing configuration types, communication mechanisms on the system.The architecture defines the responsibilities of different system modules clearly. The configure flow of variant types is analyzed and categorized into different types. The system applies principles of agile software development by using object-oriented programming paradigm and design patterns pragmatically. This makes the development and maintenance of the system easy and flexible. At the same time, the system uses specific design and implementation to increase the systems through-output, performance and availability. At the end of this thesis, test and debug statistics is provided to depict these improvements on performance.The proposed solution offers improvements over related works by presenting a comprehensive architecture, which bases on the defining of functions for different modules and the categorizing of a number of configuration types. The development and maintenance of the system proves the architecture's effectiveness on the objectives outlined in this thesis.
