Complete machine simulator has been a significant tool for embedded system developers. This thesis describes a series of research on framework design of complete machine simulator. In the first part of this thesis, the design of component base application framework of complete machine simulator is discussed in detail, covering the following topics (i) architectural design of complete machine simulator; (ii) component model and interface specification customized for complete machine simulator. In the second part of this thesis, model-driven techniques and generative programming paradigm have been introduced to overcome several inherent drawbacks of traditional development model. As a result, the proposed framework reduces developing efforts and enhances maintainability in a system family approach. The research mentioned in this thesis has been implemented in SmartSIM simulator (codename: Wukong) developed by Embedded System R&D Center at Zhejiang University, which is capable to simulate instruction set architecture including ARM, MIPS and MCS8051, and their corresponding peripheral devices. Besides full-system simulation, build-in debugging mechanism and GDB remote debugging proxy are also enabled, which make SmartSIM (Wukong) a comprehensive virtual platform to run, debug and verify embedded system software.
