Globalization of the Internet has accelerated the exchange of electronic information on both the personal and business levels. Digital signatures are significant tools being widely used within electronic commerce and secure communication areas. It provides the data commuication with integrity, confidentiality, authenticity and nonrepudiation. Consequently, secure network communication can be ensured by identifying the two parties involved in the communication.Group signature, proposed by Chaum and Heyest, has become an important field of digital signatures since 1991. The research of group signature is booming recent years, because it fits e-commerce very well. Group signature allows a member of a group to sign messages anonymously on behalf of the group. In the case of later dispute, a designated group manager can reveal the signer's identity. A group signature scheme could for instance be used in many specialized applications, such as voting, bidding, electronic cash, privacy protection and so on. A group signature scheme could also be used by an employee of a large company to sign documents on behalf of the company, while concealing organizational structures at the same time.Group signature was carefully discussed in this paper. Firstly a briefly review of the history of this article was given, and kinds of security property were also concluded here. The phases and the directions of this area were summarized, and different types of group signature schemes based on kinds of public key schemes were investigated, such as the class of CS97 group signature schemes based on RSA and signature of knowledge, the class of LC98 group signature schemes based on ElGamal, the ones based on ID_based public key schemes, and the ones based on difficult problems newly brought up.In particular, some concrete schemes were analyzed deeply on their efficiency and security. Also, the reason of these problems and the skills of avoiding them were presented. The directions of researches in this field were suggested further. Finally, the efficiency of group signature was discussed. Considering the high efficiency of XTR public key scheme, a group signature scheme based on XTR was constructed.
