With the increasing emphasis on security, automated personal identification based on biometrics has been receiving extensive attention over the past decade. Iris recognition technology with its huge potential is relatively new among different kinds of biometric recognition technologies.In this thesis, some kinds of biometric recognition technique are introduced. Then, the development of iris recognition technique and the structure of iris recognition system are discussed in detail. The algorithms of iris recognition have also been studied deeply which include pre-processing, feature extraction, and pattern match.The pre-processing have been studied and all of the process include image smoothness, localization, normalization and enhancement. In the iris location respect, a new location method is put forward. In order to remove the effects caused by displacement and zoom of iris image, iris image is transformed from Cartesian coordinates to polar coordinates.For feature extraction, a kind of algorithm is considered. The algorithm is based on wavelet transform and difference matrix, which reflects features of spatial information and scale information. For iris recognition, the Hamming distance is used. Experiments show that the method is valuable in iris recognition.At last the results and conclusions of the paper are pointed out. At the same time, some expectations to future research are predicted.
