In Reverse Engineering, mesh processing is an important factor of data processing. A good mesh can provide data of very high-quality, which can be used to reconstruct the geometric surface. This thesis focuses on a few key techniques on mesh processing, including mesh simplification, mesh mergence and mesh smoothness.First, this thesis introduces a vertex-decimation algorithm to simplify the mesh. This algorithm removes vertices of the mesh according to the curvature of the vertex weighted by the area of the triangles which are adjacent to that vertex. It carefully maintains the topology of the mesh and it is easy to implement. There are three steps to finish the mergence of two meshes, including redundant triangles removal, meshes stitching and mesh optimization. This thesis presents a new method to remove the redundant triangles efficiently for the first step, which is based on the k-d tree. The removal operation is very fast and it's suitable for large meshes. At last, this thesis proposes a feature-preserving mesh smoothing algorithm which is based on the classical Laplacian smoothing algorithm. Our algorithm solves those defects which exist in Laplacian smoothing algorithm, such as model shrinking, deformation and feature loss.
