As the development of computer technology, we have entered from network computing era into pervasive computing era. In the pervasive computing environment, more and more new devices, services and computing entities appear on the network, at the same time, the activities of people put up the high mobility and uncertainty. As People inevitably become more likely to find themselves in unfamiliar environment, they need discovery and receive desired services at anytime and anywhere. These services have a much closer relationship with surrounding spatial environment, so are called Location-Based Service. As a standard of global service publish and discovery, UDDI has the potential advantage of openness and interoperability. However, the current model for the Web Service discovery in UDDI does not directly support the particular requirements of location-based discovery because of two limitations: the first limitation is the absence of taxonomies to categorize services associated to small spaces or to a specific point in space;another limitation is the query-processing mechanism, based on exact matching between query request and service properties, to flexibly support location-based discovery. This thesis first discusses the supporting technologies of the approach, then proposes a LBS-Oriented Service Discovery Approach, which improves the UDDI registry in order to overcome the limitations of the UDDI standard in support to location-based service discovery. The design and realization of key modules in approach have been discussed in detail. Advantage and disadvantage Analysis has been made through the comparison with other current approaches. At the end, a HHU-LBSSD prototype system has been realized to validate the feasibility and validity of the system. The main work of this thesis concentrated on the following parts:1. Proposed a LBS-Oriented Service Discovery Approach based on discussion and analysis of current service discovery approaches and UDDI technology, describedthe whole architecture of the approach;2. Analyzed and designed the core module LBSSD system in detail, which included: (1) a Space Model constructed in Tree data structure that allows external entities to know obtain information about the spatial structure of the local environment;(2) a set of UDDI geographic taxonomies to support small granularity space location categorization;(3) a proxy that allow UDDI queries to include spatial criteria while maintaining conformance with the UDDI standards.3. Constructed a HHU-LBSSD prototype system on Java2 and jUDDI. HHU-LBSSD represents the administrative and physical domain of HoHai University, any user who has entered the HHU-LBSSD can benefit from the local service related to user current location.
