More and more polarization maintaining optical fibers and polarization maintaining optical fiber passive components were used because of research of optical fiber peg-top and optic interference communication. The subject of polarization maintaining optical fiber fusion was put forward because of difference between the common optical fiber and polarization maintaining optical fiber, which has special physical structure to keep the polarized optical beams from changing.The traditional way of identifying optical fiber position depends on the analog voltage range and previously setting voltage. But this method can not implement high quality fiber fusion. As for the polarization maintaining optical fiber, this way can not fulfill the polarization maintaining fiber axial direction alignment.Because of above reasons, this dissertation put forward a new way to implement the polarization maintaining fiber fusion. The polarization maintaining fiber video signal has different fine characteristic because of its different position. We digitized the different position video signals and stored them so that we got the polarization maintaining fiber digital grey values and POL curve. We put forward a methodology of corrective coefficient to solve the problem of polarization maintaining fiber principle axis alignment according to the polarization maintaining fiber POL curve with the computerized picture processing technology. At the same time, the gap and alignment was completed with the computerized picture recognizing technology and auto-control technology according to the different picture grey values.With this new way, the polarization maintaining optical fiber fusion splicer can splice polarization maintaining fibers quickly with more than 40dB polarization crosstalk. By verification this machine can meet all kinds of requirements.
