The precision alignment of the polarization axis of polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) is one of the key techniques in the applications of PMF. Based on both the light intensity distribution in our side viewing experiments and simulation of PMF, a novel method to get high precision alignment has been put forward, named as a method of characteristics judgment in five finger profile.Experiments showed that the novel method had more obvious characteristics and improved the sensitivity of angle orientation at around 0 or 90 degree of polarization axis of PANDA PMF comparing with traditional methods of azimuthal alignment. The novel method could be used for fabrication of PMF devices which require high accurate azimuthal alignment at around 0 or 90 degree of polarization axis. The following are the main contents and achievements of this dissertation. The simulation models have been specifically designed by ASAP software. The light-intensity distribution image on the observation plane is obtained by ray tracing through the cross-section of PMF. The different light-intensity distribution characteristic is analyzed and discussed, and come to the conclusion: Some light-intensity distribution characteristic is related to both the azimuth angle of polarization axis of PMF and the distance between PMF and observation plane.Found the new light intensity distribution with five finger profile in our side viewing experiments. The five finger profile is related to the azimuth angle of polarization axis of PMF and can be used to improve the precision of azimuthal alignment after analysis of the change of the five finger characteristic with respect to the azimuth angle of the PMF. The light intensity distribution with five finger profile is proved to exist in theory by computer simulation based on ray tracing method. The simulation showed that the change of light intensity distribution with five finger profile was sensitive to the azimuth angle of the PMF. The simulation showed also that when the five finger profile is used in azimuthal alignment, the precision of 0.1 degree will be gotten. Based on both our experiments and simulation, a novel method to get high precision alignment has been put forward, named as a method of characteristics judgment in five finger profile. In comparison with both POL method and five characteristics points, our experiments...
