Instance Message system is very popular nowadays, such as MSN, YAHOO,QQetc. They have millions of consumers. But there are also some issues that block thedevelopment of IM. This article analyzing these issues. Below are some of them: 1) Because every IM service provider using private IM protocol. Differentprovider's IM software can not communicate with each other. It's a big problem if wewant to apply IM in enterprises. 2) Now almost all the IM system based on Client/Server architecture. All themessages between IM clients must be routed by server. It make network overload. 3) There are few IM software on Linux or handhold terminal based on 2.5 or3G network. This project try to solve the issues mentioned above through the following ways: First. The new IM software will be based on IETF's RFC3261--Session InitialProtocol, this could make IM client communicate with each other. Second. Because of Session initial protocol's features. This IM software willprovide peer-to-peer plain text and multimedia communication. Last. This system is based on java technology. So it's cross platform. In addition. Since there are so many consumers of the current IM software. This system will use protocol transform gateway to make users of this system couldcontact with their friends using the third party IM software such as MSN, QQ etc.
