The simulation of traditional art is a new research field with the combination ofart and computer science. With the fast development of Computer Graphics,noticeable achievements have been gained in Western art system such as oil andwatercolor painting. But for the Chinese ink wash drawing, which is the chiefrepresentation of Oriental fine art system, little simulating work has been done.Hairbrush is one of the most important drawing tools. Just depending on itsflexible movement and rich ink information, the vigor of style in drawing is left on"Xuan"paper. So extending the research work based on the design of brush model isan effective method in the simulation of Chinese painting.Based on a long term drawing practice, we first make a scientific analysis for themedia of Chinese painting, its internal relationship, and painting creating mechanism.According to the summarization of brush traits and different painting style, we presenta reasonable abstract and division for the system of brush model. Then we build thevirtual brush model from 2D to 3D gradually. In the building of 3D virtual brushmodel, the techniques of 3D modeling and animation are introduced. By way ofcombining real physical model and experiences, the movement and deformation ofbrush is simulated effectively. The track unit is generated by the weighted integrationof two diffusion modes, which are modes of radiation and vector. In order to keep thecontinuity and edge smoothness of strokes, we compensate vertex using the algorithmof two-dimensional image transformation. The experiment results indicate that ourmodel has the similar feeling of real brush, and it is user friendly with simple control.So the typical art effects of Chinese painting are realized successfully.In addition, we build a complete simulation system of ink wash drawing combingthe present research results. Users can create the work of art freely with the device ofpressure sensing pen. This is meaningful in application, and fills the blank of homeand abroad.
