With the development of information relative technology in recently years, the technology of workflow develops rapidly. Workflow become one of the key technologies of achieving business process management and domination. However, the study of exception handle, transaction and time constraint in workflow were limited, which restricted the application of the workflow technology. Contrapose to this situation, this thesis studies the technique of exception handling in workflow management system. The thesis firstly discusses the research actuality, then analyses the distinguish and relation between exception handling in program and exception handling in workflow, and existing exception handle techniques in workflow management system. The origin and sort of the exception, and the principle of exception handling are also discussed. Then the thesis design and realize Rule-based method of exception handling, and the data structure is defined. In this method, the exception handling is described as rules, the exception analysis module search suited rule in the rule warehouse, and the exception handling module handles the exception. The thesis describes the build process of the rules, the process of exception handling, the burst and transmit mode of exception, and how to model exception handling using BPEL4WS. Finally, the thesis presents the relation to transaction and time constraint. The study is based on Java and Web Service technique, using BPEL4WS as the business flow modeling language. On the base of standard Java class libraries, the user-defined exception class is realized. the exception handling module is implemented Using Java technique .
