Online education is now all-pervading in many developed countries. In our country, although computer has been widely spread in some degree, online education is however in its infant age due to still low network bandwidth, network stability, and the shortage of robust teaching applications. Despite all the difficulties we are currently encountering, the trend of developing virtual apparatus and online education is in-resistible. Many institutions in our country have already made some attempts in this area, but most of them are however in experimental stage, which are too early to be used in practice. How to improve the compatibility, independency, and emulatability of virtual apparatus, and achieve smooth data-sharing among apparatus, computer terminals, and end-users is the urgent problem to be solved. In short, end-user should be able to operate apparatus via network, instead of simply perform demonstration. This article first comes with the discussion of computer-aided teaching system, e-Learning, then with the comparison of virtual and traditional laboratory, and finally with a summarization of the benefits of using virtual laboratory. As examples, real life implementations of some familiar virtual apparatus are introduced. Based on analysis and comparison, this article states the overall framework of virtual laboratory. Also, this article explains how to use current techniques such as website design, flash animation, LabVIEW, JAVA, etc., to improve actual teaching applications and build a platform of full fledged online virtual laboratory.Based on the study of functionality and infrastructure of virtual laboratory, to build online laboratory systems having online course registration, instructor evaluation, teaching management, online courseware, virtual apparatus integrated altogether in practice, is truly our prospect in the future.
