Borehole histogram and drilling section are geological maps which are widely used in geological research and production report. They are of great significance in guiding the plan of engineering geology, exploration and decision-making analysis. Generally, borehole histogram and section are traditional drawn by hand which is inefficient and not easily to modify, or by tools as Excel and AutoCAD combined with a specific programming language. Though the drawing method which used CAD technology and programming language improved the degree of automation, it was lack of functions, such as the mutual inquires between properties and graphics. Combining with the GIS technology, it can quickly and easily complete the drawing of drilling histograms and sections. In some extend, it can not only improve the degree of automation in drawing and reduce human intervention, but also can obtain the required information by picture and essay, thus, help the geologists make decision analysis.On the basis of analyzing the borehole data organization, geological structure information and data needs, the paper identified the connection method of graphic data and attribute data, then designed borehole database. According to the characteristics of data organization of MapGIS as well as the expression of borehole histogram and section, hierarchical object models were built; after that, analyzed and researched the status quo of automatic graphing after the general templates of drill histogram and section were studied. While, borehole histogram and section automatic mapping methods were expounded, including the generating methods of drilling plane graph and lithology columnar, lithology pattern filling method of rules and irregular area and so on, then combined with the development environment of MapGIS, the methods were optimized and improved. According to the problem that was difficult to deal with the coordinate relationship between the stratum and lithology describing with words; it proposed a new buffer line drawing method that based on text automatic layout idea. In this method, the user can define the lithology width and word width, it controls the word wrap of the MapGIS layout text and according to the relationship between the actual lithology description height and the virtual height of lithologic to determine the top and bottom coordinates after adjust the height lithology description, then finished the buffer line drawing. In allusion to the data update asynchronous problem which was brought by the borehole columnars and section lines of section used two sets of data coordinates, meanwhile, on the account of the continuous and discrete situation of stratum, designed the connecting method of section line in drilling hole section, it makes the data update of drilling columnar and profile line of borehole section synchronization, then makes the section line into closed areas that can be filled lithology pattern and color to draw the borehole section.On the basis of above research, using VC++6.0 and MapGIS6.7 SDK secondary exploitation platform, with SQL Server 2000 database management system, adopting object-oriented programming method, the drilling histogram and section automatic mapping system has been designed and developed. In this system, the drilling plan, borehole histogram, borehole section and its related edit functions were accomplished. Automatic mapping method was verified by the practical borehole data of HuangLong which is feasible. The automatic graphing system runs steadily, also can create beautiful and harmonious graphics which are better to meet the requirements of geological edited report and satisfy the need of actual work.
