Wireless sensor network (WSN) is a new information acquisition and processing technique. As one important supporting technique of the wireless sensor networks, location technique is the foundation of many applications of sensor networks, such as target identification, surveillance and tracking. ZigBee technology, based on the IEEE802.15.4 protocol, is a new short-range and low-rates wireless communication technology. It is a technical proposal between wireless mark technology and bluetooth. Nowadays, with the extensive application of ZigBee technology, the location technology based on the ZigBee network node becomes a hot topic. In this paper, the latest research results of the ZigBee wireless sensor network technology are applied to practical engineering projects. Location monitoring system based on ZigBee technology is designed to locate and monitor transport coal field. The system has many characteristics, such as low cost, low power consumption, high reliability, easy installation and removal and so on.Advantages and disadvantages of some typical wireless location algorithms are analyzed combined with complex situations for the coal field. The paper proposes an improved DV-Hop algorithm which combines the method of signal propagation RSSI ranging. It inhibits the process of positioning system error effectively, and improves the positioning accuracy.Distributed for the use of the site, Matlab simulates the working process of improved algorithm, and accesses to errors of all the unknown location nodes. The simulation results prove that the accuracy of the system with improved algorithm is significantly improved than that of traditional systems.Based on ZigBee-CC2430/CC2431 wireless location technology principle, hardware and software of locate nodes, reference nodes and gateway nodes in the locating system are designed. Finally, the project of wireless locating system fitting the transportation coal field is designed. The feasibility of the system is verified through the communication experiments of CC2430/CC2431.
