Because of the heterogeneous network structure and time-varying transmission conditions, the video server should supply bitstream with different quality, size and bitrate. Usually, the original bitstream must be recoded or transcoded with new setting for specific device or bandwidth. Unfortunately, this frequently means high cost and requirements for the server and network. Recently, scalable video coding (SVC) attracts much attention, since it can satisfy the requriment to supply strems for those devices with different processing capability and display capability when the network has large packet-loss. In January 2005, after analyzing 14 submitted proposals, MPEG and VCEG, working along with JVT, decided to finalize the SVC project as an extension to H.264/AVC, and announced an Amendment. After studying the thoery of H.264/AVC encoding and decoding and scalabilities of H.264-SVC, I have finished the folloing work composed of three portions:1. Research on fast mode decision algorithmA statistical fast mode decision algorithm is proposed, which reduces the candidate modes by using Bayes classifier and statistical results from huge experimental data, leading to decrease in computation of Rate-Distortion cost and encoding time.2. Design a streaming server supporting H.264-SVCThe design of the streaming server is based on open source project LiveMedia. The server supports H.264-SVC streaming with simple session transmission, following protocols such as RTSP, SDP and RTP. Combined with the mplayer integrating an open source library Open SVC Decoder, a complete server/client application system is realized, and the H.264-SVC video stream can be transmitted smoothly and plalyed clearly in this system.3. Hierarchical key management scheme for H.264-SVC streamUsing the hierarchical encryption strategy of cryptology, a hierarchical key management scheme for H.264-SVC stream is proposed, including key generation, key assignment and key management. When compared with other scheme, this proposed scheme has high security and efficiency, low storage space and flexible update.
