The important part of the Smart Grid construction of State Grid Corporation of China at the present stage is electric distribution network. The communication system of power distribution automation is important base for the Smart Grid construction. The importance of the remote channel design of information collection system in electric power distribution is stated in this paper. The major issue which the information collection system is faced with in its development is the construction of high-capacity, high stability private network remote channel. In this paper, power distribution automation communication technologies are analyzed and discussed. By comparing several major communication methods, it points out that EPON technology will have broad application perspective in distribution automation system.The feasibility of EPON's application in power distribution automation system is analyzed. The basic theory of EPON technology are introduced, including the configuration and network structure, the whole redundancy protection program, service access and application, selection of EPON devices and so on. EPON integrated the advantages of passive optical network, and can be no-slot joint with Ethernet technology. As a point-to-multipoint optical communication technology; EPON is quite suitable for constructing a long distance communication. The remote channel design of information collection system based on EPON technology is investigated in this paper. A representative design of remote channel in accordance with a realistic electric power circuit is put forward. And a program of whole redundancy protection is put forward too. The results of engineering construction indicated that EPON is easy to carry out and the cost-effective is excellent,and it is preferably and practicably to used in the power distribution automation communication between distribution substation and RTU.
