Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) is a special surface electromagnetic wave thatpropagates along the interface between a conductor and a dielectric. Amplitude of theSPPs exponentially decays as the increasing of the distance from the interface.Supercontinuum (SC) laser is a laser source with advantages as wide and flat spectra,high brightness and good coherent characters. By researching the SC laser source basedsurface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect, we can get a more comprehensive reflection ofthe SPR effect from factors as the light intensity reflectivity and the phase change. TheSC laser source based SPR effect is a subject with important theoretical and practicalsignificance.Theoretical analysis and experimental research of the SPR effect was carried out inthe present paper. The SPR effect in the installations with coated prism structure andcoated fiber structure were analyzed. The main contents of the present paper wereshown as follows:Firstly, theory of the SPR effect was analyzed in detail and numerical simulationsof the SPR effect were carried out. Influence induced by ingredients as the beamsources, the film thickness of dielectric, the dispersion character of dielectric, theincidence angle of light and the external environment were analyzed. Simulations of theoptimizations of these ingredients were calculated, which provided guidance for theexperimental studies.Secondly, the testing principles and testing methods of the SPR effect in theinstallations with the Au-coated prism structure were studied. Using a SC laser, thewavelength-scanning and angle-scanning methods can be carried out in one system. TheSC laser source based SPR effect in the installations with the Au-coated prism structurewas tested. The theoretical results matched with the experimental results. Causes of theerrors in the experiment were analyzed.Thirdly, the sensing principles of the Au-coated fiber based SPR effect werestudied. Fiber sensors based on the SPR effect were designed and realized. Thedetection system can be all-fiber by using a SC laser source. The sensing experimentswere carried out, and the experimental results were compared with the theoreticalresults. Causes of the errors were analyzed.
