LCD products is becoming more and more popular since its excellent advantages, such as exquisite image quality, low energy consumption, full panel displays and etc. Accordingly, the backlight technology development has also been driven up by the progress of LCD technology. Light source is an important component of the backlight system, which determines the brightness of backlight and the color performance. Nowadays, common backlight modules mainly use CCFL and LED as their light source, which have remarkable distinction on their character and performance. Specifically, CCFL is losing the customer and market gradually due to its fatal defect, such as high power consumption and short life span. In contrast, LED light source can save energy and have excellent color performance which may become the main force of the next-generation backlight product.The paper simply introduced the working principle and functions of backlight components, and analyzed the LED backlight's advantages and disadvantages. The work focused on the design of the side-emitting micro-optical guidepipe that can convert the LED point light source to linear light source, replace the linear light source CCFL. The guidepipe can retain the advantages of designing the Light Guide Plate and avoid the shortcomings of CCFL simultaneously. Combining with RGB LED and the technology of time mixing color, the new backlight can improve color range to 150% and spatial resolution increase twice.The principle of scattering netted dots arrangement is also present through simulation and verification. The netted dots radius function is proposed by theoretical derivation, then, amended according to a lot of simulation to get the best arrangement.The analysis show that the efficiency is above 66% and the uniformity is better than 95%, the light transmittance of this backlight is 12% more than the CCFL backlight.
