The development and spread of the Internet have witnessed constantly emerged and abundant network communication forms such as email, online community, blog, instant messenger, etc. The convenience of online communication greatly reduced the opportunities of face-to-face communication between people. Therefore, online communication is becoming one of the major communication forms of modern society.As a unique form existing extensively and being used widely on the Internet, emoticons have also evolved into a significant carrier of emotional expression along with frequent online communication. Currently, academia is still in the initial stage of the research on emoticons. On the background of the value of scientific research on man-machine communication, the inevitability of emoticons'appearance, the mutual supplementation between emoticons and traditional arts and the unique aesthetic features of emoticons, as well as on the basis of certain theories concerning cognitive psychology, semiology, arts and aesthetics, the article aims to discover the classification, morphological characteristics and existential meaning so as to reveal its profound psychological and philosophical connotations through induction and processing.In the first instance, the article presents a comparison between domestic and overseas researches in emoticons, straightens out the emergence and development course of emoticons, elucidates the artistic foundation and component elements of emoticons, and on such basis carries out an analysis of the features of emoticons as well as classifies the forming motion of emoticons, hence concludes the creation methods of emoticon forms. Aiming at the unique aesthetic reception pattern created by emoticons, people's recognition pattern of the characters and images contained in emoticons, and the aesthetic reception of emoticons.Based on the aforementioned researches, the article concludes that emoticons can be described as an art form that combines various traditional art expression elements, and transfer the essence of traditional arts i.e."formation"to the creation of digital art, and its tremendous vitality, unique spreading effect and advanced technical features solved the"social vacancy"used to exist in online interpersonal communication, while the feature of its"real-time interaction"and its digital emotional expression connects human feelings together, in the meantime such connection also further reflects the distinctive aesthetic mentality presented by people in front of the carrier of digital art.
