Virtual reality technology inspired changes and progress in related areas, haptic feedback can effectively improve the user's immersion feeling in the virtual environment. In this paper, combining virtual reality technology and computer aided design, haptic based surface modeling system is constructed based on OpenGL graphics library and OpenHaptics software development toolkit, and this new mode of surface modeling will inject great vitality into the traditional design approach .First, based on mass-spring-damping network system, the surface mechanical model is built. Conducting surface fitting of the discrete particles separately using triangular mesh and NURBS, the flexible surface model is established. Then dynamics analysis of the particle system is made under external force, the dynamic ordinary differential equation is solved using Euler method, and the dynamic surface deformation under loading process is simulated.Secondly, the prox-based force feedback mechanism in virtual environments discussed; the hardware components and software development tools of haptic /graphic dual-output system are analyzed; to satisfy the convenience manipulation and the function requirements of computer-aided modeling design, based on the window menu instructing mode, the human-computer interface of the modeling system is designed and built using Application Toolkit GLUT library functions of OpenGL.Thirdly, based on the high-level API of OpenHaptics which is the development toolkit of the force feedback device, combining relevant graphics rendering technology OpenGL, the real time Sync output of graphics and haptics is achieved, and the basic graphic / haptic two-channel feedback system is established; based on the research and inheritance of the interacting approach of traditional graphics systems, the PHANTOM Omni based operating mode of the modeling system is established.Finally, using the method of enforcing the reset of the mass spring network of the surface dynamics model and preserving the geometric state of the surface after deformation, the surface plastic deformation is achieved, actually a new zero energy equilibrious mass-spring-damping network model is rebuilt; modeling tools with specific modeling meaning are constructed using OpenGL or QuickHaptics API to characterize the interaction point; the modeling system are tested and improved in the actual practicing of haptic based surface modeling; and the positive role of haptic based modeling system in the product development process is discussed.
