Cnaphalocrocis medinalis is major migratory pest for rice production in China, and because of its long-distance migration characteristic, the occurrence of its population can be a sudden outbreak, which poses a serious threat to the rice production in China. Thus it is very important to study the early monitoring and warning technology for this migratory pest for agricultural production. This project is part of the national 948 project "the long-term monitoring of migratory pests and the technology of early disaster warning parameters from automatic acquisition of IMR (Insect Monitor Radar)", and it focused on the preliminary study on the improvement of the frequency resolution of insect monitoring radar and the extraction of insect motion parameters. This study analyzed the data from the vertical-looking radar used to monitor Cnaphalocrocis medinalis in Nanjing Jiangpu district from June 2009 to October 2009. In this paper, the background information of insect monitoring radar and the hazards of migratory pests were first introduced, with an introduction of the current research status for insect monitoring radar in the world. Then the composition system of the vertical beam chirp radar was then briefly introduced, and the method and processing of preprocessing radar data were discussed. Finally, the methods to improve the radar signal and frequency resolution were discussed, and the methods to extract insect flight parameters and the methods to estimate insect number from radar data were preliminarily studied. All these accumulated research experiences for future research focus. In the summary, the research contents of this project and the problem met in the analysis were summarized, the future research focus was proposed, and a future research outlook in this field was also made.
