As the growth of location-based services (LBS), indoor location information becomes increasingly important, such as emergency rescue, library navigation, tracking, and so on. Global Positioning System (GPS) offered very high accuracy of location positioning in the outdoor environment. Unfortunately, it is not suitable for indoor location because it couldn't receive satellite signals in the indoor environment. Among many indoor location technologies, WLAN-based indoor location has become a good research and developing direction in recent years for its wide coverage and low-cost.This thesis studies the indoor location-aware technologies and proposes a WLAN and Zigbee-based indoor location system which uses fingerprinting method. The location system is able to estimate the three-dimensional (3D) position of the target within the whole complex built environment, which means it can not only determine the target's two-dimensional (2D) coordinates, but also can identify the floor on which the target is. Besides, this system uses the Zigbee technology for area division, which enables the location server handle locating request efficiently. This thesis first describes the WLAN-based indoor positioning technologies and makes a comparative analysis of them. It focuses on the indoor locating methods and the indoor location system's overall design and the implementation of main modules. It also introduces the system architecture, hardware and software environment, program development and packaging, and detailed the interface and implementation of location server, mobile terminals and off-line sampling tools. Finally, through analyzing the result of the system test, the functions of the system is validated, and it is proven that the function and performance of the system meet the design requirements. At the end of this thesis, it points out the current shortcomings of the system and the next step of working. Also, it summaries the work and research progress during master-degree study.
