Along with the rapid development of wireless cellular communication technology, current mobile communication systems are not limited to provide only traditional voice service, but constantly add new functions to meet the requirements of market, of which the positioning service is much in demand, and this service uses the network resource to realize the localization of mobile station (MS). E-911 rasied by Federal Communications Commission (FCC) promotes the development of the wireless cellular localizing technology, and confirms that the location service is a basic function of cellular networks, especially for 3G systems. The E-911 birthed a new industry and drove the location service market.In wireless cellular networks, because of non-of-sight, multipath, background noise and bursting interfere, there will be errors in the measurement values of localizing parameters inevitably, and the positioning errors will be also conduced. This article investigated the theories, characteristics and applying ranges of existing localization methods in cellular systems, and briefly analysed the effects induced to positioning results by uncertain mobile channel.This article proposed a bran-new cellular positioning method - Weighted Centroid Correction Localization (WCCL). WCCL is unaffected by the standard of cellular systems, and can get a good positioning precision in the simulation of reference model for cellular system with simple calculation. The cellular localization experiment in urban envioronment reflected the application effects of several positioning methods in exsiting network. In the end, the article released some observations about the future development of localization technology in wirless cellular systems.
