With the rapid development of ocean transportation, radar technology has been widely used in the navigation system by sea due to its advantage of availability under all circumstances. The vessel receives a lot of radar image data with radar echo, which creates huge difficulties in high speed data transmission and data storage. With the bandwidth been fixed, the effective radar image compression technologies prove to be a vital method in reducing the volume of data transmission, improving the communication speed, and realizing the real-time communication. This thesis studies the existing image compression technology and chooses suitable compression methods to compress the radar images according to the characteristics of radar image. This paper mainly works on:1. The radar image composition is analyzed through statistical method. And basic conditions for the research on radar image compression algorithms is provided by analyzing the radar image color redundancy, structural redundancy and interframe redundancy.2. The single fame image is compressed losslessly by using the traditional Huffman coding, Run Length Encoding, arithmetic coding and then their effects are analyzed. The radar image lossy compression algorithm is also discussed based on the target outline.3. The target outline location is improved by setting neighborhood's search scope and priority, the quantity of the neighborhood is reduced which needs judgment when search the outline and the extraction rate is improved. In the image reconstruction, the connectivity of the areas is employed to reconstruct the target quickly.4. The radar images are compressed within inter-frame compression method of motion compensated interframe predication, combined with the extracted target outline.
