With great advantages of low cost, simple fabrication process, transparent, novel polymer waveguide devices become research focus in the field of Integrated Optics in recent years. Coupling connection and packaging between polymer optical waveguide chips and optical fibers are an important practical part. Excellent performance, low cost coupling package method can play the advantages of low cost of polymer waveguide chips. After thorough investigation and analysis of polymer optical waveguides and packaging technologies of photoelectron chips, we carried out a series of theoretical and experimental researches according to own characteristics of our developed polymer PSQ-L waveguide chips. Our research mainly includes the following works:(1) End coupling between single mode optical fibers and polymer PSQ-L optical waveguides are deeply discussed. First, Flat end fiber and polymer waveguide coupling factors are analyzed. The results show that the polymer waveguide has a low reflectance and good end transmission. The refractive index of 1.515 of the PSQ-LH polymer material is predicted to improve the end-coupling efficiency as the curable adhesive. Then tapered lensed fiber structural parameters are optimized. Finally, polymer-based mode converters are designed for coupling between flat end fiber and polymer ridge-shaped optical waveguide. And high coupling efficiency is obtained.(2) A low-cost, high coupling efficiency of end fibers coupling package structure is designed for the polymer PSQ-L optical waveguide chips.Design idea and method are given. Optical-mechanical-thermal comprehensive analysis of multiple factors is applied to the designed packaging structure. Including high temperature impact analysis, low temperature impact analysis, vibration modal analysis, harmonic analysis, and packaging materials analysis. The simulation results predict the good performance of the package structure.(3) Coupling efficiency between fibers and polymer PSQ-L optical waveguides are tested by Cut-back method. Experimental results prove the validity of the calculation. Based on low-cost, highly efficient UV curing adhesive junction technology, packaging process is explored for our designed package structure. Using a conical lens optical fiber combined with the flat end fiber, the polymer waveguide is packaged. Optical test result shows that a good pass optical effect is obtained and the coupling efficiency is improved. PSQ-LH polymer materials is used for coupling curing, the results show that the material played a good refractive index matching effect, and the packaging cost is reduced.
