Laser velocimetry is an important means of test in the field of shock wave and detonation. It's of great significance for the further research of the material's properties and for the development of new materials. It plays an important role in the research of energy materials like explosive or some chemical for the explosion.It's investigated the progress of the laser velocimetry. On the advantages and the disadvantages of each stage the measurement of velocity are analyzed and compared. It's introduced the structure of the system and principle of the test in Photonic Doppler Velocimetry, and the basic formulas in the test are deduced. I have designed and made the circuit of the laser, got a good kind of optical source, and finally finished building and debugging the system of Photonic Doppler Velocimetry.I have finished the test of the velocity of the vibration machine and the Hopkins bar. The result is equal to the test using other method. I have also finished measuring of the back-free surface of the aluminum in the experiment of the laser shock peening, obtaining the rising edge of the velocity in the initial moving stage. The result of the experiment is equal to the result of the theoretical.
