With the development of computer technology, mass storage devices, and digital equipment, digital image capacity has grown rapidly and has penetrated into all industries. How to effectively access and extract the image data has been an urgent problem. So content-based image retrieval technology came into being. It can directly analyze image content such as color, shape and texture, etc, describe image features reasonably and make retrieval process more effective and more adaptive to human vision. The shape is an important character which can distinguish an object from the other objects, and it is one of the most prominent character of image. Shape-based image retrieval is one of most important part of content-based image retrieval, and it has attracted the attention of more and more researchers. This paper focuses on the low-level visual features in the image shape feature description and extraction methods. It analyzes the content-based image retrieval technology background, status, development and key technology, together with the present problems and difficulties; discusses the key technology of the shape feature based image retrieval research; studies the shape of the image representation and retrieval technology; illustrates the methods of the description based on the shape and area; presents an improved theory based on the original part of the algorithm implementation; and finally studies a compensation mechanism image retrieval method based on the minimum boundary circle, which not only extracts the characteristics of the target area but also compensates the minimization of the boundary circle of the target under the background of regional characteristics and achieves good results.
