Access network is one of the most challenging regions in the entire telecommunications network. To meet the growing bandwidth requirements of users and to achieve high-speed access networks, broadband and intelligent, a variety of emerging access technologies have come up, such as LAN, xDSL, Cable Modem, PLC (power line), etc., but optical access technology is considered the most potential way in the future. Due to its easy maintenance, high bandwidth, low cost, Passive optical network (PON) become a leader in optical access, it is an ideal physical platform that is able to access to voice, data, video and other business.Passive optical network (PON) has experienced several stages of development since the 20th century. At first, people think APON/BPON technology is the ideal model of integrated access which is the combined by ATM technology and PON technology, however, due to the explosive growth of data services, ATM is inefficient and its protocol is quite complicated, and the cost is too high, so it have not been deployed in a large-scale. In this background, the GPON and EPON standard come out.In this paper, it firstly reviews the advantages of EPON technology, and describes the basic structure of EPON systems, including OLT, ONU, ODN and other key equipment, the related protocol and key technical points. Then, make an in-depth study of some current existing EPON bandwidth allocation algorithm, from SDA to a variety of dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm, and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of these algorithms and the problem of improving these algorithms. In the final stage, using the MATLAB to simulate the proposed algorithm, including the network bandwidth utilization, throughput and delay characteristics, etc., the simulation results show that the algorithm optimizes network performance to some extent, and is able to meet the requirements of different types of business.
