Edge is one of the most important and rudimental feature of a image.The edge contains important information in the image, and it is the significant clue to visual perception. Image's edge detection and extraction play an important role in image processing. The research for edge detection has been very up and doing for a long time and many practical edge detector has been advanced,but most of the edge detection focus on gray image and the color image's edge detection has not been developed until recent years.In the beginning of this article,we describe the research background and significance of the image edge detection, simple to descript its development status and trends at home and abroad. On the premise of the gray image detection about differential coefficient and template matching,point at the problem with color image detection and sum up the edge detection methods of color image based on RGB colorspace,we have done some innovative and exploratory work focus on the edge detection of color image based on HSI colorspace:With the basic of HSI colorspace research and analysis,we have improved it,then we can obtain the better effects on color image's edge detection at some time. By using Vector gradient operator with Roberts operator, Prewitt operator and Sobel operator for image's edge detection based on HSI colorspace and improved HS*I* colorspace . Some experiments are given to demonstrate the feasibility and practicability of the methods.
