With the rapid development of Internet technology, there have been many new businesses which require high bandwidth, high speed. Because traditional access methods cannot meet these needs of users, Optical access network has become a new choice. Consequently, EPON system, which is a passive optical network based on Ethernet, has become one of the best technologies in the next generation broadband access network. In this paper some key technologies in EPON system are studied, including the working principle of EPON system, hierarchical models, MPCP protocol, OAM protocol and dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm of the uplink channel, the major tasks are as follows:(1) According to the status of the access network technology, analysis and compares the characteristics of PON technology, on this basis, also research the advantages of EPON technology and status at home and abroad.(2) Focus on the key technologies of EPON systems:Synchronization, Burst technology, dynamic bandwidth allocation, security issues, MPCP protocol, OAM.(3) Analysis of bandwidth allocation algorithm used in the EPON system:both static and dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm. Summarizes the shortcomings and the advantages of these algorithms. Finally, put forward principles for dynamic bandwidth allocation.(4) Through research the existing bandwidth allocation algorithm, a new DBA algorithm is proposed, while its performance is analyzer. It is shown from the simulation results that the new algorithm reduces the protection timeslots between different services and provided enough buffers for high priority to improve the uplink bandwidth utilization.
