With the demand of multimedia services and mobile communications, the computing power and throughout continue to increase in video processing. A few years ago, performance increase in single-core processor was mainly reached by increasing clock frequency and designing more complex systems. But now, Chip multiprocessors(CMP) architecture has become a solution to ever-increasing performance requirements. CMP architecture could obviously increase the computing performance by using parallel system. In the meanwhile, CMP architecture has advantage of lower power consumption, it widely used in image and video coding and decoding processing. Based on the multiprocessor research and the MPEG-2 algorithm, an video parallel compression algorithm is presented based on the OpenMP in this paper.The paper is organized as follows: Section 1 gives a broad overview of MPSoC and video compression, and then section 2 presents the theory of MPEG-2,describes some important technology and key modules,such as DCT / IDCT, quantization coding, motion estimation and compensation. Section 3 mainly discuss OpenMP environment and the method of parallel processing, study and design in the based of the specific video and images.In the last, the MPEG-2 parallel algorithm on one, two, four processors using the OpenMP compiler are simulated. The homogeneous and heterogeneous MPEG-2 parallel compression algorithms were implemented by OpenMP.
