The massive data rendering is a hot issue in the computer graphics research field, which plays an important role in GIS, games and military simulation. Although the computer graphics display technologies are advanced along with the rapid development in computer hardware, still, the great needs of the real-time rendering for the high precise and massive data can not be satisfied. Based on the related research of massive data storage and computer graphics, this paper focuses on the key technologies and algorithms of Massive Data Rendering. The main contents can be summarized as follows:1. For the massive data rendering in the triangular mesh format, this paper researches and implements the related technologies and algorithms, such as the space division, multi-resolution and multi-level rendering of models and textures. In addition, it also studies the GIS spatial analysis functions.2. An improved algorithm is proposed for interactive large-scale terrain rendering using the GPU programming. We simplify the mesh structure and the arrangements of blocks. Besides, the block mapping and real-time grid segmentation technology are proposed. With the implementation of the rendering framework for the external memory, the large-scale terrain rendering is supported and a platform for visualizing large-scale terrain is set up.3. This paper implements a rendering framework for the massive data visualization, based on the thread pool and external storage. It is developed using hierarchical and modular design and supported both the synchronous and asynchronous IO. Besides, the system functions can be extended by plug-ins engine. This framework can perform interactive efficient rendering of large-scale scenes on a common PC, which provides a foundation implementation for the technologies and algorithms referred above.The rendering technologies and algorithms this paper referred have been integrated into VRGIS platform developed by the laboratory and the correctness and reliability have been verified by the experimental results and applications.
