The wireless sensor network (WSN) emerges and develops rapidly with the significant progress seen in computer technology, micro-electronics and wireless communication. A combination of a variety of technology advances, development of WSN involves researches of multiple subjects. With a wide area of future application, it's among the most heated research area globally.First presented in the thesis is relevant information regarding WSN and its current development. Then a WSN design for industrial application is presented, in which Atmel's AVR single chip is used as the controller, and Silicon Lab's Si4432 RFIC is used as the communicator. The system contains nodes of three different kinds:one coordinator, several routers and one set of handheld devices. The coordinator and routers, attaining electricity supply from the main power, are constantly working for data transmission and sensor network maintenance. While the handheld devices, supported by battery, send controlling signals to the system. The network protocol remains the fundamental technology and underlies the realization of optimal function of a WSN system. In the design presented, the system's network management is adapted from the ZigBee protocol. We simplified the protocol by reducing some redundant functions of ZigBee, and re-designing the network management project to meet the particular industrial demands. Further illustration will show by embedding FreeRTOS operating system to the microcontroller used in the presented design. We achieved higher reliability and improved timelines of the whole system. The introduction of the operating system reduced the complexity of the program's structure, increased the efficiency of the task management, thus laid the foundation for further development. The design of WSN system presented in this thesis is highly reliable, cost efficient, user-friendly, easy to maintain, and is a viable approach of wireless control and data collection for industrial applications.
