Digital speech technology has been widely used in many fields of communications in recent years, but because of the bandwidth-limited underwater acoustic communications channel and its high temporal and spatial variability, it is one of the most difficult and challenging subjects to use acoustical wave to implement underwater digital speech communications in the marine technology. Speech recognition and speech synthesis technology are used in source coding and decoding. The data volume is reduced, and the problem of limited acoustic channel capacity is solved. In this paper, a hardware system based on the TI's digital signal processor chip TMS320VC5509A is designed for an underwater acoustic communication transmitter based on the technology of Bopomofo coding. The isolated word speech recognition and related communication algorithms have been finished based on the hardware system to convert the speech commands to its corresponding Pinyin binary code. The equivalent code speed of only 12.5bit/s is far lower than the traditional speech coding technology of 4~16kbit/s, greatly reducing the speed of communication requirement and has created favorable conditions for immediate, reliable and clear speech communication in the bandwidth-limited and complex underwater acoustic channel.
