Error-correction coding has been widely used in fields such as satellite communications, mobile communications. Reed-Solomon (RS) code, as one of the most important error-correction codes, because of its simply encoding, mature effective decoding algorithm and excellent capacity in correcting random and paroxysmal errors, is widely applied to various digital communication systems to satisfy the requirement of channel reliability.Firstly, RS code's encoding, hard-decision decoding principles which are widely used, is studied in this thesis, and the possible improved programs used to reduce the time cost in syndrome calculation, Chien search and Berlekamp evaluation is particularly discussed about RS(8,6), RS(16,12), RS(32,21), RS(64,39), RS(128,76), RS(128,74), then multipurpose hard-decision decoder is developed on FPGA.Secondly, the algorithm on RS code soft-decision decoding is studied. The extra coding gain can be gotten because soft-decision decoding can made full use of the received information. However, the complexity of decoder and the cost of time are increased by the additional calculation and operation at the same time, so that the application of soft-decision decoding is restricted. An algorithm for RS (8, 6) soft-decision decoding is presented, which is called the Chase algorithms. Improvement has been made at searching the minimum reliability code elements, selecting error pattern and correction strategy to decrease both the complexity of decoding and time cost when channel is in good condition, and in the mean time, to raise the accuracy rate. At last, the electric circuit is designed, the main algorithm has been tested sufficiently in Matlab, and has been developed on FPGA, and the functions of the RS docoder have been proved correct by the test report.
