Network-on-Chip (NoC) is a new system-on-chip architecture, which draws on the idea of parallel computer network technology, making up for the deficiencies of traditional bus, and meeting the future communication between multiple IP core. Different from computer networks, the whole area and power is also considered for NoC beside network performance. Computing and communication are able to be designed separately in NoC, which simplifies the difficulty of multi-core SoC design. NoC includes the router, interconnection and network interface. Router implements the network interconnection, processing and managing functions, and router is the most important part of the NoC design, which is also the key of high-performance NoC. Therefore, the basic theories of NoC are described in this paper, furthermore, the relevant technologies about router are described in detail. At present, data transmission is realized between the routers by two links, both working alone, one for receiving data, another one used to send data, but in practice, not all links are in working status. In a certain period of time there may be a link in an idle state, which wastes interconnection resources and bandwidth. At the same time, there is large real-time communication, which requires the network to provide"best effort"services and reduce the delay caused by the other data. So a new router design which able to transport data in dual-channel is proposed in this paper. The traditional way of working with one read\write pointer has been changed to double read\write pointer for virtual channels, which makes the data read and written fast, simultaneously, the conversion of two transmission modes is achieved by detecting the working status of other channels. In this paper, the design of each module and functional simulation are realized by Verilog with Modelsim simulation tool. The simulation results show that the dual-channel transmission can improve the network traffic, especially real-time communication, and save interconnection relatively.
