With the development and improvement of hardware devices, higher and faster transmission rate attracts people's attention, leading to the appearance of USB 3.0. USB 3.0 research direction includes how to improve the transmission rate, how to enhance the bus power and output current, how to provide new power management system, and how to make USB 3.0 be compatible with USB 2.0, etc.Based on the project"Design technique research of mixed-signal IC for single chip", a USB 3.0 power management chip called XDC1029 is designed in this thesis.The design of XDC1029 is described in detail in this paper, including the system design, the IC specification definition, and the circuit design of the key sub-blocks. The simulation of the whole chip and the layout design are also described in this paper. A novel charge pump voltage doubler without threshold loss is presented. It eliminates the body effect and threshold loss existing in MOS device by substituting a type of substrate variable unit for the diode-connected MOSFET in Dickson charge pump. Based on the USB 3.0 specification, this chip can control the output current of USB 3.0 system accurately. To avoid the abnormal situation that USB devices may encounter, the chip has the function of current limit protection, short circuit protection, over temperature protection and fault alert, etc.As the design of the whole chip is oriented to USB 3.0 system, it can supply continuous current of 2A, and the maximum output current can be up to 2.5A. It can be compatible with USB 2.0 system by trimming the internal circuits. Based on a 0.35μm 20V BCD process, the circuit design, layout design, simulations and verifications have been completed using the EDA tools of Spectre and Virtuoso. The simulation results demonstrate that all the functions have been implemented and electrical characteristics are consistent with the design specification.
