To solve the problems of high loss and low efficiency of millimeter-wave planar antennas, this dissertation makes a deeply study on the elimination of surface wave and novel antenna designs are proposed, which have been verified by experimental results.In this paper, two novel types of slot antennas, containing edge-type slot antenna and corner-type slot antenna, are proposed for mm-wave applications. To improve the radiation performance and achieve dual polarization, each type consists of four slot antennas with certain distribution pattern. Shorting vias are introduced around the radiation slots to suppress the excitation of surface waves. The metal patch with slots on it and the ground are shorted with the vias. Under that situation, the surface wave is truncated. Simulation and test data show that the designed single elements, working at 30GHz, can achieve a relative-10dB bandwidth of 5%, radiation efficiency of 94%, gain of 8dBi. Furthermore, large antenna arrays are designed based on these two types of antenna elements. A 2×2 edge-type slot antenna array and an 8x8 corner-type slot antenna array, working at 30GHz, are designed. Simulations show that they can achieve a relative-10dB bandwidth of 5% and 7%, a radiation efficiency of 90% and 83%, a gain of 11dBi and 21dBi, respectively.
