Wireless networks have made rapid development in recent years. Especially, wireless local area networks (WLAN) based on the IEEE 802.11 series protocols have been more and more deployed. Wireless Mesh Networks is a new kind of distributed networks with high-capacity and high-speed. It provides mobile users with the access to the backbone networks within its multi-hop wireless mesh structure. Comparing with traditional wireless networks, it has a promising future for various applications and has advantages such as high spectrum efficiency, coverage ability, good compatibility and low deployment cost, etc.To begin with, this dissertation makes an introduction to the fundamental concepts of wireless mesh networks. And based on an actual demand that is wireless video monitoring, we study the advantages of wireless mesh networks as the next generation video monitoring system, and the WMN's routing protocol design guidelines is discussed. There major categories of routing protocols, proactive routing protocols, on-demand routing protocols and hybrid routing protocols are compared. Existing wireless mesh routing protocols futures and advantages and disadvantages are discussed too. Based on a current and mature protocol which called Dynamic Source Routing (DSR), we do some improvement. We consider the real-time services over on-demand routing protocols in WMN. To improve the throughput and reduce the end-to-end delay, we propose a new on-demand routing protocol Redundant Multipath Source Routing (RMSR) and show the performance of RMSR, which is an extension of MSR and RSR. The performance of the network using the RMSR algorithm in terms of network capacity and end-to-end queuing delay is analyzed by computing the number of active links. Compared with DSR, we can figure out the network capacity which is not increased by redundant packets, but can improve network delay from O(N) to O(log N).Finally, we use RMSR on the wireless mesh routing devices which are developed independently by software school, Dalian University of Technology. We setup an actual video monitoring system in the campus to do some testing and evaluation. We achieved a very good result.
